WHAT'S NEW

The Murder Mystery "Who Killed Charlotte Glen?" went off fairly well; even though I did forget a crucial cue line, no one but the cast noticed (but O! did they notice!).

The Monster Data Base just passed the 18500 individual mark.  I should have some more trees online soon.

Cousin Mike in Maine has finished his 2002 racing season intact and as sane as a Pepin can be.  He’s purchased a new car for the 2003 racing season and will be moving up to pro-stocks as a rookie.

THIS MONTH'S FEATURE:  A second look at Suzanne PEPIN and her two husbands, François GODFROY and Pierre JAVRAY.

On 28 Oct 2002, cousin Libby Quanstrom sent the following regarding Suzanne and her two husbands:

According to the PRDH, Francois Godefroy St. Georges was a soldier of the Company of Lespervanche of villenueve St. Georges Diocese of Paris.  He married Suzanne at Pointe Claire, Montreal, she was 29 and he 31

“Now what is odd, “ says Libby,  “is that the family cert for the first marriage is void.  The children born before 1765 should be listed.  So, where were they born?”

A guess might be Montréal, as this is where François and Suzanne married, but it is just a guess

I double checked Tanguay and found a footnote for François GODFROY which reads,

"De St-Georges ; ci-devant soldat de la colonie, compagnie de M. Lepervanche ; mort d'un coup de fusil qu'll avait reçu, le même jour, d'un sauvage sauteux, en voulant l'empécher de tuer ses animaux."

     As for JAVRAY vs GASSE:

Tome 4, p 592, is where the marriage for Suzanne and Pierre can be found.  Tanguay lists JAVAR and LADÉROUTE as the variation on JAVRAY.

Tome 1, p 319, doesn’t mention JAVRAY or JAVAR.

Tome 1, p 254 shows a listing only for a Thomas GASSE and wife Geneviève SUREAU.

Tome 4, p 182, shows Thomas, another Thomas, Philippe, François, Joseph, Jean-Baptiste, Louis, and Isaac.

In the “TABLE ALPHABÉTIQUE DES NOMS D'HOMMES  leurs VARIATION ET SURNOMS”,

(Tome 7, p 543) we got JAVAR, JAVRAY, and LADÉROUTE.

For GASSE (Tome 7, p 533) th only variation listed is PETIT.

Conclusion: Tanguay didn’t know everything . . .

. . . but then we know that. [insert cheeky grin HERE]

TANGUAY SAYS WHAT?

Footnotes from the Monster Data Base.

1237 Nicolas MARCOTTE, baptized 1645.  The footnote on his name in Tome 1, p 410, says: "Le mariage a cu lieu sous le nom de Marguotte."

Nick’s marriage information is filed under MARGUOTTE.

12286 Marie-Anne Marganne de la Valtrie.  The footnote on her name in Tome 1, p 411, says, "Filleule de M. De Courcelles, gouverneur.

Marie-Anne is the goddaughter of Mr. De Courcelles, the Governor.

2056 François MARGUERIE.  The footnote on his name in Tome 1, p 411, "Beaufrère de Jacques Hertel, et interprète aux Trois-Rivières.  Il se noya le 23 mai 1648, près des Trois-Rivières, avec Jean Amiot, et son corps fut retrouvé vis-à-vis la Restitution de St. Joseph, à Sillery, et tous deux furent inhumé é 10 juin 1648, à Québcec."

François is the brother-in-law of Jacques Hertel, and [an] interpreter in Three Rivers.  He drowned close to Three Rivers, with Jean Amiot, his body was recovered near Québec, Amoit’s near the Resitution of St. Joseph at Sillery.  The two were buried together 10 June 1648 in Québec.

Says the footnote Tome 5, p 511, “Sieur de la Lahaye ; voir acte de Foi et Hommage, vol. I, 1ère partie, p. 36, année 1668.--Il avai en la concession ed l'Ile-aux-Cochons, conjointement avec Jean Véron et Claude David."

Looks like François was in charge of Lahaye, had some sort of legal agreement at Ile-aux-Cochons with Jean Véron and Claude David.

18352 Guillaume MAROIST Says the footnote on his occupation, in Tome 1, p 412, Greffier de le Seigneurie de Beaupré.--Registres de l'Ange-Gardien."

Guillaume was Registrar for the guy in charge of Beupré

1880 Abraham MARTIN dit L’Escossais.  The footnote on his name in Tome 1, p 415, "Pilote royal en co pays.--Greffe de Le Coustre, 27 déc 1647.

"Martin eût l'honneur de léguer son nom au champ de bataille oû se rencontrèrent les armées de Wolfe et de Montcalm : Les Plaines d'Abraham.

"Il est digne de remarque que Mgr. Taché, Evêque de la Rivière Rouge, compte à la fois parmi ses ancêtre en ligne directe, les trois premiers propriétaires de Québec, Louis Hébert, Guillaume Couillard et Abraham Martin."

Abraham was from Scotland.  Royal pilot in co pays. – Registrar for Coustre, December 27th, 1647.  This is the guy whos ename was given to the battlefield where the armies of Wolfe and Montcalm met : the Plains of Abraham. " Abraham’s related to Mgr. Taché, Bishop of the Red River.  The first three “owners” of Quebec were Louis Hébert, Guillaume Couillard and Abraham Martin.

474 Antoine MARTIN dit Montpellier.  Footnote on his name in Tome 1, p 415, says "Soldat et cordonnier.  "A ses noces on dansa une espése de ballet, savoir cinq soldats."--Journal des Jésuites."

Antoine, here, has something to do with the ballet

44 Marie CHALIFOUR.  The footnote on her burial in Tome 1, p 415, says, “Cette jeune femme n'ayait que quatorze ans."

Marie was only 14 years old.

18517 Marie-Thérèse-Catherine BOIS.  The footnote on her name in Tome 5, p 580, says,  "Aussi appelée Lebel, du nom du second mari de sa mère.".

Which is true.  Anne SOUCY, the mother of Marie-Thérèse-Catherine BOIS, was married twice.  The first time to Jean LEBEL on 16 Aug 1689, the second time to Jacques BOIS, on 24 Nov 1704.  Marie-Thérèse-Catherine BOIS, baptized in 1705, is listed with Anne SOUCY and Jacques BOIS, but, y’know, I gotta wonder about Marie-Thérèse-Catherine.  I mean, it strikes me as a little odd that Anne’s first daughter by her second husband is also know by the surname of Anne’s first husband.

RAMBLINGS FROM THE EDITOR

It’s a funny thing really.  Working on last month’s issue, when I got to this part of the newsletter, I discovered I really didn’t have anything to ramble about.  It was odd.

Sitting on the front porch with my 2am cigarette, I started thinking about it.

I’ve reduced the stress in my life by approximately 300%.  Cool thing about this is I no longer need blood pressure medication.  And I’m not just sitting here on my hands, wondering what I can and cannot afford to do this month, I’m getting out and doing things.

I have a social life again.  It got to a point there for a while where I was having to schedule time to sleep, but, hey, beats the hell of worrying myself to a frazzle over whether or not the him waiting for me at home was going to be upset because I was off with my stupid-*** friends – again.

As for the historic reenactment community, all I can say is I think it’s a shame I didn’t get involved in this sort of thing sooner.  It’s refreshing to be spending Real Time hanging with a bunch of people who I don’t have to dumb things down for, I don’t have to explain why I like and do the things I do; we got too much in common.  Besides dressing in 19th century clothing and doing things in a 19th century way for the Public at assorted venues, The Columbia Detachment of the Royal Engineers also educates the Public on the finer, and often misplaced, points of early British Columbian history.

Mind you, had some one told me, 10 years ago, that my wardrobe would contain things like chemises, corded petticoats, and corsets – and/or that I’d be excited about it -- I’d have laughed right in his/her face and suggested an immediate change of medication.

By the end of my 2am cigarette, I came to the conclusion that I may actually be on to something here.

La vie n'est pas trop mal.
